What advice can you give on pain management after a fibromyalgia diagnosis?

Q: I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. My body aches all over and I’m so tired. I don’t want this illness to overtake my active lifestyle. What advice can you give me?

A: I’m sorry you have this diagnosis, but I think you’re right that fibromyalgia doesn’t have to completely overtake who you are and what you like to do. Even though there isn’t a cure, taking time for exercise, relaxation and reducing stress can make a big difference for you. Connect with your doctor to learn more about what is appropriate for you personally. I also suggest lining up help to manage your more tiring household tasks so you can spend your energy on the things you enjoy. Cooking, cleaning, making the bed, and running errands and more can all be done by caregivers like we have at Freedom Home Care. A case manager, like myself, could also bring you to your medical appointments and take notes so you can be sure to understand what is being discussed about your care. Freedom Home Care specializes in setting up care plans based on our client’s unique needs. You can call 507.387.HOME (4663) for a free in-home assessment to find out more about our home care services or case management services.
